Reasons Research is Extremely Important in the Field of Library and Information Science

In other to justify the claim that research is an indispensable tool in the field of library
and information science, it would be of benefit if we throw more light on important keywords which are research and library and information science. This would make it easier to justify the claim that research is an indispensable tool in L.I.S

What is Research?

The dictionary of library and information science defines research as the systematic, painstaking, investigation of a topic, or in a field of study, often employing techniques of hypothesis and experimentation, undertaken by a person intent on revealing new facts, theories or principles or determining the current state of the subject. Aguolu (1989) defines research as the systematic investigation towards increasing the sum of human knowledge, to discover new knowledge, to rediscover, systematize and preserve existing knowledge. Isaac M. Ogbonna (2009) accentuated that research can be best conceived as the process of arriving at dependable solutions to problems through the planned and systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.
All of the above definitions of research all boils down to three conspicuous points. Which are?
·        Research is a process
·        Research is aimed at providing knowledge
·        Research is aimed at providing solutions to problems

General need of research

Research is a vital necessary tool which is useful in both our social and cultural system of the nation. It is an indispensable tool in every organization, every career including medicine, engineering, forestry, biochemistry, micro-biology etc.  Research is needed in the political, educational, economical, etc. system of the nation.
This is however because every one of the field needs information, in order to;

Decision making

Herbert Simon and his associates (1992) made it clear that the work of managers, of scientist, of engineers, of lawyers-the work that steers the course of society and its economic and governmental organization is largely work of decisions and solving problems. If the work of almost every profession largely depends on decision making and effective decision made would depend on the amount of relevant information one has. The level of relevant information one has would depend on the level of research one has conducted. How then can research be neglected?

Problem Solving

One is the many uses of information is that it is aimed at solving problems. One cannot thrive to obtain information for nothing. It is either he or she acquires the information to know or to solve a particular issue.
Fortunately, research is a powerful means to acquire information. In fact, research has been one of the common means by which scholars acquire information and made the academic world what it is truly is.

Truth

Ogbonna (2009) defines research as a means which enables us to gain truth. Without research hypothesis would remain hypothesis. It is research that helps one to seek out the real truth about something and therefore satisfy the curiosity of man.

Research as an indispensable tool in the field of library and information science

The field of library and information science is a field that cannot do with information at all. In fact, it aims at providing information service to users, either in the field of academics or in any organization or company the librarians or information scientist may find themselves.
The roles of research in the field of library and information science cannot be therefore down played. Information usually garnered through research. So therefore, if there is no research conducted by the librarians or information scientist, there would hardly be any relevant information needed for the field of LIS to meet it expected target.
Research has also promoted the technological innovations in the field of LIS. Library automation services like the use of OPAC, MARC, the use of online search strategies are all the product of research.
Research has also set a standard in the field of Library and information science. Dewey Decimal classification scheme, Cutter Tables, Library of congress classification scheme, Sears List of Subject heading etc. did not just emerged out of mere reasoning or from nowhere. Research has been carried out to ensure that the library and information centers need to be standardized.
Research in Library and information science can also need to ensure the professional growth all library scientist and information scientist. Without, research, they may not be able to add to their existing knowledge.
Research is also needed in the field of LIS to add to its existing knowledge, which would be passed from one generation to another. Therefore, producing a more knowledgeable and brilliant generation of library and information scientist that can meet the demands of the nest generation.
How, then can the field of library and information scientist do without research? It would be impossible, because the field of library and information science would not function at all without research.
